What if your innovation cycle had to match the pace of war?
At Prague Defence Tech Week 2025, Snake Island Institute delivered a message few in the defense sector can afford to ignore: the battlefield in Ukraine shifts every 3–4 months. Doctrine doesn’t — and most institutions move even slower.
For Ukrainian units like the 3rd Assault Brigade, this isn’t theory. It’s survival. Representing SII on the ground was our Head of Defense Tech, Viktoriia Honcharuk, who brought frontline urgency to the panel “Lessons Learned from the 3rd Assault Brigade.” This conversation — bridging frontline experience with Western defense ecosystems — underscored our mission: connecting real-time combat-tested insights with global innovation pipelines.
Elsewhere at the European Defense Tech Hackathon, SII team members served as mentors and judges. Ukrainian startups compress “long-term” product cycles — 5–10 years in Silicon Valley — into just 6–24 months on the front lines. The delta between timelines reveals something deeper: we’re not just out of sync in processes, we’re living in different strategic worlds.
That disconnect must be addressed — not just by updating hardware, but by transforming the entire system behind it. The discussions with EU funders and fellow judges confirmed: the appetite for practical, battlefield-tested innovation is growing.
In Prague, we made the case for bold, system-level thinking: long-term strategy must be shaped by real-time input, frontline insights should drive the next decade of defense, and true innovation means staying offensive, open-minded, and focused on building the deep-strike and defense systems of the future.
